I find it curious how you want to separate the “literary” world from the “genre” world. At the Maui Writers Conference, among the faculty, we used to joke they gave literary writers awards and genre writers checks. However, you mention something that’s part of the problem: working for free for “exposure”. I’m not a fan of it and it hurts all writers. There’s a reason the Writers Guild exists in Hollywood. We’ll never have one among authors, but perhaps this video with Harlan Ellison: Pay The Writer, might add some insight.
